August promises to be a very, very full month. We’ve got guests coming and mini-vacations and work trips to keep us busy. School is starting back up again at the end of the month and I’m testing myself with three classes this time around. If I maintain this pace, I can finish up in a year and finally call myself a college graduate.
I’m almost ready for Fall, although I have a feeling this Richmond summer is going to drag for a bit. After so much heat and humidity, I’m ready for crisp fall nights, warm bowls of soup and snuggle weather.
This Month I Will…
1. Cross something off my 101 in 1001 list.
2. Start my 3 class semester.
3. Go vegan for a weekend.
4. Take a picture every day.
5. Find a green way to get plant-eating bugs out of my garden.
6. Road trip to Ocean City, MD for a weekend.
7. Play hostess to two couples on two different weekends.
8. Go on a date with my husband.
9. Try three new recipes.
10. Make some big blog changes.

I hate not being able to snuggle like you can in the winter! So sticky!
Oh, and to get the buggies off your plants… a regular spray bottle with a teaspoon of liquid dishsoap + 1 tsp white vinegar. Don’t spray on new growth until it’s toughened up. Also, if you see another cure that tells you to include cooking oil, it could end up burning your plants in the sun.
This solution is good for aphids and soft bugs. I don’t know about bugs with shells.
Thanks for the bug suggestion! I tried it yesterday and am keeping my fingers crossed my garden stops getting eaten.
Love your quote, Terra! So true…
Someone once told me that everyone is doing the best they can, given their circumstances, both life experiences, and inner emotional and mental state. No one tries to do badly, or to fail. They do their best. It might not seem very good to you, but you have no right to judge, as you can’t tell what they’ve been through, or what their emotional or mental challenges are.
Sometimes I have a hard time remembering that, but try to put it into play in my life as much as possible.
Your quote just reminded me of that.
Good luck with so many classes! I am positive you can handle it!
I agree with Lara – this weather SUCKS for snuggling. But at least we don’t have that super sucky east coast humidity. Yuck!
I’ve been vegan for approximately 2 months and WOW, hard. Good luck!
Oh, and Lara is right on about the soap spray for aphids and soft bodied bugs, though I just use soap & water.
There are a lot of plants that repel bugs so next year you can companion plant – garlic and the herbs like basil intermixed with your tomatoes, etc.
Cinnamon is really good for ants, too, as is a line of dish soap – they usually won’t cross it.
You can also puree garlic cloves with the soap and water to make a more potent spray.
Tomato cutworms (big fat green caterpillars) you need to look for and remove by hand – they leave big poops. If you see one that’s got a bunch of white eggs on it’s back, don’t squash it – there’s a predatory wasp that lays it’s eggs on cutworms and the larvae kill the cutworms when they hatch, so you want to keep as many of those around as you can.
Ooh! I can’t wait to see what blog changes you make!
Hmmmm….cleaning ???? I thought we all convinced you to hire a cleaning person.
Ha! We almost did, but never got around to it. It’s still a possibility but work has gotten a bit slower lately so the cleaning has become more manageable.
When I first glanced at it, I though Eat Bugs was one of the options!
Couldn’t do that Vegan Weeks thing!
Two of my best friends are coming to visit and they’re both vegan so I figured I could be vegan for the weekend they visit just to see if I can do it. I don’t think I could EVER do it full time – cheese is my favorite food group!
Excited to see these blog changes! Also looking forward to hearing about your three classes this semester!
